Sam Walton Memorial Border Trophy

The Border Trophy is a B type race, open to 1st, 2nd and 3rd class riders

Event Info

The race turned out to be a great success, attracting 21 entries on the line to make 63 entries in total. The weather in the main was good with no wind to speak of, 95% dry and warm.

The action started virtually from the start with three riders going clear on the climb “up the trench” from Netherwitton. These riders were Alistair Kay (last year’s winner), Kit Gilham and Sean Polson. These three riders worked well together and stayed away until a lap and a bit to go. With the leading trio clear for most of the race, it was Kit Gilham who took the victory in the Dave Walton memorial sprint at Scots Gap. Kit also took all four primes on the climb at Rothley Hall to secure the overall King of the Mountains and the Wilkinson Sword Dagger.

Meanwhile back in the peloton riders attacked on numerous occasions to try and get clear of the pack and pull back the leading three. The trios lead grew to thirty seconds on the first lap, then up to two minutes by the second lap. At one stage the gap went down to thirty seconds.

However the 3 leaders persisted and the gap went up to 2 minutes again. Around about this time 5 riders managed to get clear of the peloton and worked well together and managed eventually to catch the 3 leaders. Shortly after these 5 escaped, the main bunch resigned themselves to the fact that they were not going to catch the leaders, and the leaders lead grew to 3 minutes.

As the race approached the finish in Longwitton, it was between 8 riders. 3 riders managed to create a small gap on the final climb to Hill Top where Alistair Key took the overall victory.

The 1st junior was won by Nathan Edmondson of Glendene CC.

Barnesbury rider John Cann put in a great performance once again to finish 14th in the 2nd group and clear of the main field. The main field sprint for 16th place effectively was won by Josh Edmondson (Glendene CC), 3.13m down on the winner.
