The Ballantyne Memorial Trophy Road Race

“Held under the technical regulations of British Cycling”

Held on Sunday the 29th of April 2012, at The Mitford Cricket Club, The Mitford Estate, Mitford, Morpeth, Northumberland

The race is run in memory of Alan Ballantyne, who sadly died aged only 18 years old.  Alan died when out running with the Elswick Harriers one evening.  Following his passing his family sold his bike and other cycling equipment, and used the money to purchase The Ballantyne Memorial Trophy.  Alan was a talented and popular member of The Tyne Olympic Cycling Club.

The race would like to thank The High Sheriff of Northumberland, Mrs Harriet Benson can kindly agreeing to present the prizes after the races.

Riders are to assemble on the drive outside the pavilion at 10.20am, at 10.25am the race safety briefing will take place. 

At 10.30am the neutralised section of the race will begin.  The race will turn left out of the Grounds, and onto the B6343.  The neutralised section will then continue for a further 500 metres, riders are to give way to traffic during the neutralised section.  The race will now continue in a westerly direction on the B6343 to Dyke Neuk,  There will be an intermediate sprint on the straight just after Dyke Neuk, at The Public Telephone Box.  Then continue on the same road to Hartburn.  Riders are to exercise caution at Hartburn Bridge.  The race then continues to Scot’s Gap then  continues straight on to Cambo.  In Cambo turn right onto the B6342 to head in a northerly direction to Harwood Gate.  At Harwood Gate turn left onto unclassified road to head in a North Westerly direction past Winter’s Gibbet.  Continue to Elsdon, at end of Village green riders should turn right onto the B6341 to head in an easterly direction.  Continue to Prime at Bilsmoor, riders should exercise considerable caution on the descent of Bilsmoor.  Continue on the B6341 in an Easterly direction through Hepple to Flotterton, here turn left onto unclassified road to Sharperton.  Just after crossing the Coquet bridge turn left onto unclassified road to Holystone, continue on same road to Swindon.  Here turn right onto the B6341 to head in a westerly direction.  Continue to prime at Bilsmoor.  Then on to Elsdon, at the start of the village green turn left on to unclassified road, continue to prime at Winter’s Gibbet, then onto Harwood Gate.  Here turn right onto the B6342 to head in a southerly direction to Cambo.  Here turn left onto the B6343 to head in an easterly direction.  Continue on B6343 through Scot’s Gap, Hartburn, Dyke Neuk to finish 200 metres before the descent of Mitford bank for a distance of 55 miles.

Please note, No hard shell helmet no ride, there will be no neutral service and following cars are not permitted.  The race would like to thank Mitford Parish Council and The Mitford Cricket Club.  Competitors are to park in the field opposite the Cricket Club or in the grounds of the cricket club, at no point should competitors or spectators park on the B6343.  There is also no parking in the main entrance to the Mitford Estate.  The race does allow for entry on the Line in accordance with BC rules, so try to encourage your club mates to compete.  The race would like to thank the commissaires and everyone else who makes this race possible

Please note primes may be omitted, if the race is short of prime judges on the day.
The first three riders over each hill prime (Bilsmoor, Bilsmoor and the Gibbet) will be awarded points. 3 points for 1st, 2 points for 2nd and 1point for 3rd place on each prime.

The race is currently struggling for funds, it is likely that extra income will be generated from entries on the line.  The race will be run not for profit and any profit generated will be used to create additional prizes.

Please note litter is not required either in Mitford, or discarded on the course of the race.  I repeat litter is not required.  Any complaints regarding the race should be made in writing, and should be addresses to the event secretary, Christopher Gray, 131G Tynedale Drive, Blyth, Northumberland, NE24 4LU
