Ballantyne Trophy

“Held under the technical regulations of British Cycling”

Note: This event was originally scheduled for 24/03/2012 but was cancelled due to terrible weather conditions.

On Saturday the 13th of July 2013, at the Parish Hall, Church Street, Rothbury

The race is run in memory of Alan Ballantyne, who sadly died aged only 18 years old.  Alan died when out running with the Elswick Harriers one evening.  Following his passing his family sold his bike and other cycling equipment, and used the money to purchase The Ballantyne Memorial Trophy.  Alan was a talented and popular member of The Tyne Olympic Cycling Club.

Riders are to assemble at 9.20am in the small road in front of the Methodist Church.  At 9.25am the race safety briefing will take place.  At 9.30am the short neutralised section will begin. 

Riders are to turn onto the B6341 westbound, riders are to give way in the neutralised section,

The race will begin proper after about 200 metres by Rothbury House. 

The race then continues west on the B6341 through Thropton (caution) to Flotterton.  Here the race turns right onto unclassified road to head in a north westerly direction. 

Just after crossing the Coquet Bridge on the eastern edge of Sharperton the race turns left onto unclassified through Holystone to Swindon.  Here the race turns right onto the B6341 west bound. 

Continue to Prime at Bilsmoor.  Then continue to Elsdon. 

At the start of the village green turn left onto unclassified road to Prime at Winter’s Gibbet.  The race continues in a south easterly direction to Harwood Gate.  Here turn left onto the B6342 eastbound.  Continue to Rothlry Crossroads.  Here turn left onto the B6342 Northbound. Continue over Ewesley Fell, to prime at Coldrife. 

Then continue north to finish at top of Garleigh Moor, approximately 2 mile south of Rothbury. 

A race distance of approx 28 miles..

Please note, No hard shell helmet no ride, there will be no neutral service and following cars are not permitted.  The race does allow for entry on the Line in accordance with BC rules, so try to encourage your club mates to compete.  The race would like to thank the commissaires and everyone else who makes this race possible

Parking

There is a public car park just across the river in Rothbury. Please use this.

Prizes:

  • 1st Place £50 plus The Ballantyne Memorial Trophy to be held till next year’s race
  • 2nd place £20, 3rd place £15
  • 1st Junior £15
  • 1st Lady £15
  • Overall King of The Mountains £15

Winner the prime on Winter’s Gibbet, a cake donated by Marion and Alan Graham of the Cyclists Tea Room, Elsdon

Please note primes may be omitted, if the race is short of prime judges on the day.

The first three riders over each hill prime (Bilsmoor,Coldrife and the Gibbet) will be awarded points. 3 points for 1st, 2 points for 2nd and 1point for 3rd place on each prime.

The race is currently struggling for funds, it is likely that extra income will be generated from entries on the line.  The race will be run not for profit and any profit generated will be used to create additional prizes.

Please note litter is not required either in Rothbury, or discarded on the course of the race.  I repeat litter is not required.
