Border Trophy (Sam Walton Memorial)

Note: This event was originally scheduled for 24/03/2012 but was cancelled due to terrible weather conditions.

On Saturday the 13th of July 2013, at The Parish Hall, Church Street, Rothbury

The race is run in memory of Sam Walton, a former member of the Barnesbury. Sam was a popular and successful racing cyclist. Winning the Northumberland and Durham BAR, the Manchester and district BAR, the national student hill climb championship and much more. Sam sadly died in a motor cycling accident.

Riders are to assemble on the short road outside the Methodist Church at 12.50 hours. At 12.55 hours the race safety briefing will take place. Then at 13.00 hours the race will begin its short neutralised section.

Riders are to turn left onto the B6341 westbound. The Neutralised section will end after approximately 200 metres, by Rothbury House. The race will then continue west through Thropton (caution) to Flotterton. Here the race turns right onto unclassified road to head in a North Westerly direction.

After crossing the Coquet Bridge on the Eastern edge of Sharperton. The race turns left onto unclassified road through Holystone, the race then continues in a southerly direction to Swindon. Here the race turns right back onto the B6341 westbound. The race then continues to prime at Bilsmoor. Then onto Elsdon, at the start of the village green the race turns left onto unclassified road to Prime at Winter’s Gibbet.

The race then continues in a south easterly direction to Harwood Gate. Here the race turns right onto the B6342 southbound. The race continues to Cambo, here the race turns left onto the B6343 to head in a easterly direction.

The race continues through Scot’s Gap and Hartburn to Mitford. On the eastern edge of Mitford the race turns left onto unclassified road (saint Leonard’s lane). The race then continues north to Fairmoor. Here the race turns left onto unclassified road to head in a north westerly direction through Pigdon to Netherwitton.

Approximately 200 metres east of Netherwitton (where the race has usually finished) will be an intermediate sprint competition, specifically The Dave Walton Memorial Sprint.

The race then continues to Ritton Bank. Riders should please note that approximately a quarter of a mile after the top. There is a section of road which has numerous potholes. The length of this section is approx 200 metres. Riders should exercise due caution at this stage. Riders then continue to exercise caution on the fast descent to Forestburn Gate.

At FBG turn left onto the B6342 to head in a southerly direction. Continue to Prime at Coldrife. Then continue on same road over Ewesley Fell to Rothley Crossroads. Here the race turns left onto unclassified road to head in a easterly direction. Through Longwitton and down The trench to Netherwitton.

In Netherwitton turn left onto unclassified road to head in a north westerly direction. Retrace to Ritton Bank, then once again exercise caution at the potholes then the quick descent. When arriving at Forestburn Gate this time turn right to head North on the B6342 Continue to finish at the top of Garleigh Moor, approximately 2 miles south of Rothbury. For a race distance of 100km.

Please note no hard shell helmet no ride, there will be no neutral service car and following cars are not permitted. The race does allow for entry on the line so try to encourage your club mates to compete. The race would like to thank the commissaire and all other helpers. The race would also like to thank The All Saint’s Church.

Cars should not be parked on Church Street in the vicinity of the Parish Hall, as elderly/disabled residents require access. Use the car park just over the river.

Please note primes may be omitted if the race is short of prime judges upon the day. The first three riders over every hill prime will gain points 4 points for 1st, 2 points for 2nd and 1 point for third.

The race is currently struggling for funds, it is likely that extra income will be generated from entries on the day. The race will be run not to make a profit, so additional prizes may well be posted out.
