Event Info

Barnesbury CC hosted the second round in the North East Cyclo Cross league 2015 series at Gallagher Park, Bedlington on 26th September.

In dry conditions, the Senior race was run over a technical course involving several short to medium climbs at varius gradients to test the skills and fitness of the competitors.

The course was set out around the crown of the reclaimed spoil heap on the site of the old Bedlington "D" Doctor Pit colliery, so as with the North East MTB cross country race held in the early Summer, riders rack up a fair bit of climbing - though less so on the cyclocross course than the MTBXC. The Senior race saw a tight leading group disputing the lead over the first few laps: Veteran Colin Ash (Cestria CC) lead over the line on the first lap, Jon Bayley (Gosforth CC) the second and Junior Craig Gow (Tyneside Vagabonds CC) the third, with Dean Penfold (unatt) also in the mix. By the fourth lap, Craig Gow had opened a growing gap on the other three who continued to bash heads. The elastic snapped to Bayley on lap 6 and he slipped back to be overtaken by Chris Burns (CestriaCC) on lap seven to take 4th place while Penfold and Ash battled on, with Penfold taking second. First Veteran outside the top 3 was Philip Addyman (6th), first Junior outside the top 3 was Dan Hadnum (Vieri Velo RT)(8th).

Alexandra Rimmer (Mountain Goat Coaching) won the Youths race to take the U16 prize, beating Matthew Wells (Tyneside Vagabonds CC), 1st place U14, Jack Nicholson (Barnesbury CC) 2nd Place U14 and Kurt Smith (Barnesbury CC) 3rd.

Meanwhile the U12s race had shown who the battlers were; in a field of 14, first place was taken by U12 Katie Hadnum (Hetton Hawks), second by U12 Jonathan Morley (Barnesbury CC) and third by U8 Daniel Thompson (Cleveland Wheelers) - these three each winning their age categories.

Barnesbury CC used the race to decide the club Youth Cyclocross Champions, so the event saw a good turnout from the club's growing youth section.
