Event Info

Due to increased traffic levels on the A189 Spine Road course, this year’s Johnny Rankin Trophy saw the event moved to an early Sunday morning start, rather than the traditional midweek evening fixture. The event was kindly sponsored by Scott Sports UK and Simms Cycle Workshop and with a field of 90 competitors, thankfully the weather played ball and we were treated to a warm, sunny and dry day.

There were two Scott Cadence Helmets up for grabs as part of a big prize pot – one for the rider with the most improved times (taken from the results from last season’s race against the times of this event) - this won by Stephen Hill of Alnwick CC who managed to carve an impressive 8mins 50secs off his time. Blaine Mecalf of Team Swift had a good day on the bike, coming third overall (52:54) and his race number was drawn from the hat back at HQs for the second Scott Cadence helmet. David Hordon of Barnesbury CC was the first rider to get the event underway at 8:01, and this year’s scratch position was taken up by Keith Murray of DRAG2ZERO for the third successive year. Keith secured his hat-trick of wins with a time of 51:02 and once again lifted the Johnny Rankin Trophy – he had some kind words for the event organisers and fellow competitors, before shooting off for a cool-off swim in Ellerton Lake with his boys! There were some impressive rides by Barnesbury CC members, notably Jamie Johnson (58:59) – 2nd fastest road bike. In the Barnesbury CC Handicap, Stephen McIntosh took first place and won the Jack Burnley Trophy (1:04:11), Gareth Davies 2nd (1:23:38), and Kyle Spence 3rd (1:05:24). The Stan Sadler Trophy for the Fastest Barnesbury CC Novice was awarded to John Routledge who clocked an impressive 57:10 on the 25 mile course (26.239 MPH).
