Cairngorm CC Race Weekend

Cairngorm CC Race Weekend

“Race Weekend” is an annual event organised by Cairngorm Cycling Club and consists of four competitions based in or around the scenic town of Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands.  The event is very well attended, with 60-90 riders competing in each race.
This September, five Barnesbury riders:  Terry Wilkinson, Brian Johnson, Dean Madden, Steve Clark and Mark Armstrong made the journey up north to represent the Club in this event.  We set off on Friday and after negotiating rush hour traffic around Edinburgh and Perth, found ourselves on the picturesque road to the Highlands.  Our accommodation was a log cabin in Carrbridge, and although simple, provided all the mod cons required for a comfortable weekend.

Cairngorm Hill Climb

Saturday started with Cairngorm Mountain Hill Climb.    The route is approximately 8 miles long and has approx. 1,200 elevation, climbing up to the highest car park in the country, at the ski station on top of the Cairngorm.  It is a beautiful winding road with spectacular views, not that you can appreciate the surroundings when you are riding through the pain!
Barnesbury made their mark on the event through the excellent result by Terry, finishing 3rd overall (2nd Senior).

Mackie Trophy TT

Beautiful afternoon weather made this TT very enjoyable.  The route is around 13 miles, undulating course through a beautiful highland forest.  The course is quite technical, with a few sharp bends, and requiring good bike handling skills.
Terry was again showing top form and doing the club proud, by finishing third overall.

Kincraig 10 TT

Sunday started off misty and fresh.  The morning time trial was a “grippy”, tough course, just south of Aviemore.  All the local “big hitters” were present, but Barnesbury still managed to get into the top third of the very competitive field of 92 riders, with Terry finishing 9th and Brian 15th.

Kincraig Australian Pursuit

In the afternoon, we took part in a fast and furious pursuit race around the shores of Loch Insh.  Several laps of a choppy, undulating course was a challenge.  Mark did an excellent ride managing to stay in the front group and finishing 7th.  Barnesbury riders adopted team tactic of trying to get Terry to the front, however did not manage to catch the front group.  Terry, benefiting from a lead out by Brian, finished 21st.

The festival of cycling also included a well attended women’s race on Sunday.

The excellent atmosphere and hospitality of the organising club made the weekend  a pleasure for the participants.  Warm, sunny Indian summer weather and stunning views added to the enjoyment.  The professional look of the “Barnesbury gazebo” and strong results in the races impressed fellow competitors.

We hope to make this an annual trip for Barnesbury racers!
